Summer 2015 Applications

We are pleased to announce that from midnight tonight we will be accepting applications for the Summer 2015 Rome Art Program.

As of November 1st, potential students are invited to submit their applications for a place on the Summer 2015 program.

The Rome Art Program is designed to inspire students to expand their artistic vision through painting and drawing on the streets of Rome; expanding on the plein-air tradition of earlier generations of artists.

The Program’s ideology is based on the compelling impact that firsthand observation and perception have on drawing and painting. Students will work on location taking their inspiration from the evocative ruins, churches, Renaissance palaces, museums, streets and gardens that constitute the Italian landscape.  The Rome Art Program students become part of the fabric of the city as they paint and draw directly from millennia-old landmarks, and in the gardens and streets of lesser-known areas of Rome where locals live and work.

Critiques and lectures will lend insight and prompt a deeper knowledge of each student’s artistic journey. Guiding students through important sites, distinguished art historians will illuminate the significance of historic places and periods; leading regular on-site discourses and field trips.

The curriculum will be complemented by evening lectures and receptions at the American and British Academies and visits to the city’s diverse contemporary art galleries.

  • Daily plein–air painting in watercolor, gouache and acrylic
  • Daily drawing, plein–air or transcribing masterworks in churches and museums
  • Weekly on–site seminars with our art historian
  • Weekly in-depth group critiques and Visiting Artist critiques
  • Daily individual on-site critiques and one to one support

A rich and varied activity schedule complements the main program:

  • Opportunities to visit Venice, Siena and Arezzo
  • Field trips to Pompeii and Florence with our art historian
