Our Mission

Launched in 2009, the Rome Art Program is designed to inspire students to develop their artistic vision through painting and drawing on the streets of Rome; expanding on the plein-air tradition of earlier generations of artists. The Program has an internationally recognized faculty of artists, visiting artists, and art historians.

Rome Art Program’s ideology is based on the compelling impact that firsthand observation and perception have on drawing and painting, where the interaction of figuration and abstraction intermingle. Students work on location taking their inspiration from the evocative ruins, churches, Renaissance palaces, museums, streets, and parks that constitute the landscape of Rome. Critiques and lectures lend insight and prompt a deeper knowledge of each student’s artistic journey. Guiding students through important sites, distinguished art historians will teach students to read the language of the past and of the present.

Every student matters. Rome Art Program welcomes students pursuing their B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees in Fine Art, as well as students of Art History, Architecture, Photography, Design, and Filmmaking, who seek to expand their understanding of Fine Art by acquiring an understanding of studio practice. It is an intense program where participants experience another culture, find their own personal vision, and create artwork with passion.

Rome Art Program program is a New York State registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization.
