It is not often that one is able to say that a program really changes students. During their time on the Rome Art Program the perceptions of students grow, it offers them such an expanded field for their new art practice, or indeed the revitalizing and establishing of mature engagements with making art; particularly painting and drawing.
This program gives students the ability to respond to multiple environs in a continual manner over four or eight week periods, enabling a full and exciting immersion into the rigours of plein-air painting and drawing.
It has been my pleasure to be part of this program for the past four years and it has also been wonderful to be able to nominate a number of generous scholarships to talented Australian students. Many have completed this program with outstanding results; developing, exploring and enlarging young (and not so young) art practices.
The tradition of plein air painting is embraced and upheld in this course and the discipline has had an impact on art students and artists from many backgrounds, countries and educational Institutions.
Social interaction is also part of the experience. By sharing with other students they not only participate in all the daily activities but then have time to interact with each other; learning and gathering material for the studio when returning home.
I would highly recommend this course to all. It is an exceptional experience where students study practically, are tutored, are adventurous, have intelligent discourse and enjoy all the wonders of Rome – the light, sound and culture.
I sincerely commend the RAP Artistic Director Carole Robb for her vision and tenacity in establishing the Rome Art Program for International Art Students and Artists.
